Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Question about defeating monsters with spells, loosing stamina and loosing clue tokens

by Efecka

After our first play some questions came to mind, that we couldn't answer using the rulebook:
1. When a clue token icon is in the penalty section of an adventure card, do you gain or loose a clue token?
2. Using a card that says you may defeat any monster, of the monsters curently in play -> does the monster have to be on the adventure card you are resolving this turn?
3. I attempted to solve an adventure card with a task consisting of two perils and loose one stamina and a second task consisting of two terrors and loosing one sanity -> I completed my first task, but for the second task i managed to roll only one terror before loosing the rest of my dice - do I have to loose the one sanity (part of the second task) aswell, or do I just follow the penalty of the adventure cards

Can't I just keep removing 1 die and re-rolling until I have one die left, and only then if it's a terror symbol, the terror effect will occur?

I ask this because I use this technique if I have a red die in my pool and want to lock a wild symbol in a spell.

If a spell/item has a condition on it which states that it must be used before or after rolling (e.g. Flute of the Outer Gods), I assume this means before (or after) any individual roll. In other words:

1) I can roll the dice pool, possibly complete a task (or not), and then use the item before continuing to roll the dice I have left.

and not ...

2) I must use the spell/item before rolling any dice (or after finishing rolling all dice for those items/spells with the 'after rolling' condition).

Many thanks for any assistance.

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Simple question on what happens to the adventure card after you fail it

I read the rules again after a solo game and thought I played wrong. Under resolving adventures whether successful or NOT, you take the adventure card and put it in a pile in front of you forming a "trophy pile" then resolve the positive or negative effects of the card. Essentially you get the trophy on an adventure card even if you fail the adventure.

So I just read here in some other posts that if an adventure is failed, you take the penalty but leave the adventure card in play (do not take it in your trophy pile). You can remove monsters this way making the adventure a bit easier on subsequent turns.

Could some clarify for me and please cite the rule book.

Thanks!

Hi, just trying the game again,
1. if I roll and end up with a terror result but fail to complete a task on a card, with a terror effect on it saying fail this adventure can I 1st use a clue token to try again or do you fail it immediately without being able to use a clue?

2. Is there any way of avoiding -1 sanity or stamina when winning a task with that symbol on it? Am I correct in thinking complete the task you have to lose san or stam?
Thanks

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Question about clock advancement on "Another Time" adventure

Trying the expansion tonight I encountered an odd case: Completing the second task in the "Another Time" adventure card caused the clock to progress to midnight. We had a midnight effect from the previous mythos card that had the "closes the doors" effect, in which the next time the clock struck midnight all other world cards were discarded and not replaced.

So my question is, since I accomplished all tasks for "Another Time", does it count as complete, or does it get discarded once the clock strikes midnight, and is therefore impossible in this scenario?

My group resolved that in the interest of moving play along we would advance the clock after resolving the adventure's rewards. But I couldn't find a rule for this issue.

The ally card states "Once per turn, you may place 1 stamina token on this card to have Ryan add the yellow die to your dice pool.

Question: does the stamina come from the character card or the bank?

In a recent game, we came to a missunderstanding: as part of a monster task on an adventure, we had to advance the clock. and so we did (immediately), then we resolved the midnight effects and turned over a new mythos card. only then, did we complete the adventure and go to the clock phase, where the clock was advanced another time. Was this correct?? and what would happen if the mythos card locked a green die? would it be removed from the dice pool immediately?

Is it a requirement that focusing spells (spells that hold a die or two) only be used on failed rolls?

Or can I roll...pass a test, and use a spell to hold one of the left over dice?

Ok, I need some clarification on spells.

When they are cast I take the die/dice I want to lock and place it on the spell icon without changing its face. This die can now be used by myself or another player (on their turn) to either:

1) Use the die as it was placed to complete a task
2) Use the die and simply add it to my dice pool to re-roll

Am I right so far?

If correct, say the die was the red or yellow and I use option (2), can I re-roll it as many times as I want per normal rules? Or do I have to have an item card that says I can keep using it?

Allright guys , I've played a sessions the other night with my friend , we aren't english native speaker , but pretty much bilingual.

We had an argument , we each understand the card but differently

The mythos card :

All task requirement and penalties that cause an investigator to lose sanity or stamina are increase by 1

The adventure card :

(in orders)
SCROLL / stamina -1
Scroll / Sanity -1
Investigation(2) / Scroll

Penalty : Sanity
Reward : clue/clue/doom track/elder sign

My understanding
To complete the card you must do
2Scroll / Stamina-2
2Scroll / Sanity-2
Investigation(2) / Scroll

Penalty : 2 sanity
Reward : clue/clue/doom track/elder sign

My friend :
To complete the card you must do
Scroll / Stamina-2
Scroll / Sanity-2
Investigation(2) / Scroll

Penalty : 2 sanity
Reward : clue/clue/doom track/elder sign

So what do you guys think?
(writting and re-reading , I'm pretty sure I'm right)

Its just something I noticed when reading about the three different types of monster tasks. It mentions partial covering.
now I am very sad in as much that I always check out contents, so I went through all the cards to see the partial ones...........there are none. I have the full compliment of cards but no partial spaces on any of them. Is this just a pre-expansion rule?

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Questions about spells

I have a few questions about spells.

1. Say I have only one die left, and I'm in possession of a securing spell. I failed my final roll. Is it still allowed to secure that die for another turn, or do I have to discard it because of the failed roll?

2. I'm having a double securing spell as my only spell card. Must I secure 2 dice and no less at once, or can I also secure a single die and a second one later, as long as I didn't use the first one (even in different turns, in which case I have to discard it? By the way, do I have to discard it if I secured and then used only one die, or do I still have the right to secure a second die later, after the first die has been discarded?

I expect the answer on the first question to be that I still can secure a die, but nothing in the rules makes that clear to me. And I expect the answer on the second question to be that the dice can be secured individually, but that the card is discarded at the moment it is 'empty', no matter if two or just one have been used (so you'll want to secure 2 dice before you use one).

Can anyone clarify this?
