Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Casting two spells after a roll.

1st play and got stuck on this.

Is it possible to cast two spells on the same dice roll to secure two dice? (assuming both spells only hold one die)

Can you use a spell to secure a terror dice on a failed roll to avoid the terror effect?

Thanks.

I'm about to purchase the game, and have downloaded the rules from the FFG site. Reading them in conjunction with all of the forum posts, videos etc. here have given me a pretty good idea of how the game is played before I even get it, but a couple of questions strike me;

1) Am I correct that, when investigators have provided assistance, all of the dice are returned to the dice pool (unless locked) at the end of the current player turn, ie. you don't have to wait until the assiting player's turn to return the die he has focused to the pool?

2) Cthulhu's card states in the text for his attack that monsters don't appear once he has awoken. My understanding was that, whichever Ancient One is opposing the players, once it awakens, all Adventure cards are removed, and no new ones, and no Mythos cards are drawn. It is by definition therefore impossible for monsters to appear after any of the Ancient ones awakens, and this part of the text on Cthulhu's card is redundant. Is this correct, or am I missing something?

Sorry if these have been asked and answered many times before, and many thanks in anticipation of any help.

I Slayed a Monster that had come up on a Card. In doing so, I released another monster. The only space available was the space from the monster i just killed. Do i instantly replace and fight new monster now as i try complete remaining tasks? Or am i actually meant to hold off getting the First monster until i've resolved whole Adventure? If i fail to claim the whole adventure, i still claim the monster i killed i presume?

What happens to the red die if an Adventure card, "We need to find help" for instance, which locks the red die is failed. Shuddle Mell's card only says to discard the card and any monsters on it. Does the red die go back in the dice pool or is it destroyed?

Can someone clarify for me the following point:

* I successfully resolve an adventure.
* After I gain the rewards I turn the clock hand. It is now midnight.

When do I replace the Adventure I've solved? Before or after I turn the clock?

If I replace the adventure before I turn the clock and the new adventure has an At Midnight ability, does that ability straight away?

Thanks!

My red die is locked on the 'We Need to Find Help' adventure card. As a result of completing a separate adventure, the 'Wizard Whateley' monster was added to a different adventure card. This monster has the red die locking symbol on its token along with a lore symbol.

Am I allowed to defeat that monster just by rolling a lore symbol? Or is locking the red die part of the requirement for defeating it? i.e. I need to complete 'We Need to Find Help' first, the red die then becomes locked on Wizard Whateley and then I am allowed to defeat the monster.

I ask since it would clearly be useful to get rid of this monster before it is able to lock the red die, should it be released from the adventure card currently locking it.

Thanks

The GOO Hastur has the following attack statement on his card ...

When Hastur awakens, the "X" in his battle task is equal to the number of monters in play

... What if there's no monsters, so he has an investigation of ZERO in his task bar?

You ignore the first (investigation) icon? I would say so, but I'm hoping someone can confirm or if there are any other thoughts? ... Thanks, Walts

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Rules Questions about the Nun and Scientist(?)

Hello BGG!

I have a couple rules questions about Elder Sign, and the players involved.

1) When playing the Nun character, her ability is to ignore any lingering effects on Mythos cards. Does this mean that if the card has an effect such as "A Monster Appears!" you can completely ignore this (in a multiplayer game), or does she only ignore effects such as "Each Player Loses 1 Sanity," where it effects each player separately.

2) One of the characters (sorry, I don't have the game in front of me... Scientist?) has the ability where no monsters can be placed on the board during her turn. If for example, you are playing a two player game and the Scientist is always the player who strikes the clock to Midnight (2nd player), does she ignore every Mythos card that says "A Monster Appears!" as the lingering effect?

The Mythos cards seem to be the main means have having monsters enter the board, and having her be able to block all of them seems unfair.

His special ability seems really weak, and can't even come into effect if you're avoiding Other World cards.

We've tweaked his attack to make him more interesting and his special ability more functional:

When Yog Sothoth attacks, the investigators as a group must either discard 1 Other World trophy, or choose one investigator to be devoured.

Hi!, just occured now;

I locked one die from a fail with my spell (I was Drake), but my character died, the spell is gone? or the die will be locked until someone uses? I mean, after I used the spell to lock a die, this locked die is a table's die or it counts as and iten to purposes of death?

also, if a player with none but one stamina, complete the last task of and adventure that requires you to lose one stamina, waht happens, my guess is the adventure is complete, all non investigator relatad bonus were acquired (such as elder signs) but since the investigator died, none clue, or itens will goes to that player.

Thanks!!

Hi, i recently bought this game and now started my first solo play.

I encountered the graveyard card and it says terror: discard all dice showing ... Results.

But the image is so unclear for me.. Anyone knows what its meant to be?
Also if it's referring to a terror dice, it's a hard card because you need terror dice to furfill the task.

Only possibility i see is to use a spell to get succes.

I appreciate your help in this one.n

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Ashcan Pete's Scrounge ability clarificatiom and related skills

The ability states:
Each time Pete gains 1 Common Item, Unique Item, or Spell, he may choose to instead gain 1 clue Token, Common Item, Unique Item or Spell

From what I understand, if he gains 2 Spells after resolving an adventure,or at the Lost&Found for instance, he may instead gain any combination of alternatives.

So he could swap the two spells for 2 clue tokens, or a common item and a unique item,a spell and a 1 Clue token, etc.

Another question: characters who gain extra items of the listed type like the Archeologist, Salesman and Magician, are these abilities only triggered on gain effects, or from purchasing as well?

So, for example, Bob Jenkins can't purchase two Common Items for only two trophies, right?

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Mandy Thompson - reroll only 1 die?

by Darth Rubi

Hi All

I picked up Elder Sign over the weekend and played a couple of games. We won both - vs Yog-Sothoth and Ithaqua, with the second being very close!

I have a fairly simple rules query: Using Mandy Thompson's ability, can I choose to only reroll 1 die, or do I have to reroll 2? Ie, let's say I have 2 dice and roll 2 peril, but I need 1 peril and 1 lore, then can I reroll just one of dice and keep 1 of the peril results?

Thanks!

PS: the wording on Mandy Thompson is "Once per day,
after any player has rolled, Mandy may reroll 2 dice before
determining if the active player was able to complete a task"

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Yog-Sothoth and Closes the doors clarification

I just played a solo Elder Sign with Yog-Sothoth as the Old One. Yog-Sothoth's card states that if the Other World deck becomes 'depleted' then Y-S awakens. I then drew the Mythos card 'Closes the doors' which says to discard all Other World cards 'from play' and do not replace them.

I assume this means that all OW cards are immediately removed from the game no matter where they are (in the deck, on the board, etc.) and that therefore Y-S wakes up as the deck has become 'depleted'.

I am not 100% sure what 'from play' means. It could mean face up cards only? Otherwise Y-S could wake up pretty soon into the game if it is one of the first Mythos cards to be drawn.

Any thoughts?

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Changing die after it is secured on a spell

by GAFBlizzard

I am looking forward to playing this game with a group, but I have been looking through the rules and playing on my own to get a grasp of it. I have some quick rules questions since my forum and Google attempts have failed to find authoritative answers:

1. If a die is secured on a spell with (for example) a Lore face, can another player roll the other dice, then decide to take the spell Lore die and instantly change it to a Peril die using the shotgun item?

2. Similar to question 1, could a player actually use the Shotgun item to change some OTHER player's secured spell die to a Peril face, but leave it on the spell card for later use by another player? This would effectively let you use your Shotgun to help someone else out. I wasn't sure if dice secured to spells were supposed to be impossible to change, but I could not find any exact rule on it.

3. I found one thread on this but there does not seem to be a truly official answer -- if your investigator is devoured during normal play, the rules mention losing all cards but spells. Some people might say that "items" includes spells in this case, and some might not. Some might say that you lose all unused spells, but all spells with dice on them remain in play. Is there any official/semi-official ruling on this?

Thanks very much!

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Question regarding Other World placement

Hi!

Just bought the game and started looking at the rules, when I struck the Other World rule.

The text says that you place th OW card bellow the six adventures. What does it means?

1- You add a 7th place in the museum, where 6 are for areas in it, and 1 is for OW?

2- You place the OW card literaly bellow one of the location cards? How to resolve this?

Thanks!
