If the clock advances to midnight and the newly drawn mythos card causes the last doom token to be placed, does the Ancient One instantly attack or does the first attack happen when midnight strikes again? In other words, do the investigators get a round of attacks before the Ancient One? Thanks.

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Activating the Terror Effect after failing a task, by having set aside a die showing a terror result?

by Perceval

I came across with a strange situation, I tried to resolve the adventure "Something Has Broken Free".

Allow me to remind you the whole deal with this adventure: it has a Terror Effect that you immediately fail the adventure and it has 2 tasks, one consisting of 1 skull result and another consisting of 2 terror results.

To the point, I got there with 6 green dice and 1 clue token on my reserve, I rolled and got the skull I needed, first task completed. I got down to the second task, I rolled and got 1 terror, I used a clue token and set aside that terror-showing die and rerolled the rest, I failed to get the second terror result I needed, but I was left with the 1 I set aside moments before.

Does that set aside terror-showing die activate the Terror Effect?
My opinion is that it doesn't, I came to that conclusion by finding the following somewhere in this forum, that seems to be kinda related...

Any previously spell secured/focused/assisted dice showing terror results don't count for the terror effect to become active.

So, I *guess* that in addition any set aside dice don't count for activating the Terror Effect. What do you think guys?

Does play stop, and move to battling the Ancient One as soon the doom track is filled? For instance, I drew a mythos card at midnight that required me to place the final doom token and draw a monster card. The monster card locked the red die, which would mean I would lose it upon the AO waking up. My question is this: should I go on to place the monster token and loose the red die before shifting into battle, or when the doom track is filled do other actions immediately stop causing the game to shift into battle? Thanks in advance.

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: 2 Questions to focusing

hi!

1st question:

When the the terror effect on an adventure causes me to discard all terror dice, do I have to discard the focused die too if it would show a terror symbol?

2nd: lets say i wanna complete the advanture " a peculiar speciman" which shows 3 investigations --> 6 investigations --> and a peril WITH AN ARROW!

I roll with 6 green dice and in the first roll I get a peril and wanted to safe it for later. So I focus the peril and now I roll again with 4 green dice (cause one additional die gets discarded) and get the 3 investigations. Now I roll again with 3 dice and I fail which forces me to discard a die. now I roll with 2 dice and I get 2 times 3 investigations and accomplish the 6 investigations task.

now I have no die exept the focused peril die.
can I use this die to accomplish the last task allthough I cannot roll any dice?

Hello all,

sorry if this has been asked already, I did as much searching as I could but could not find anything. What happens if a player's investigator is devoured, then the next investigator the player gets is Ashcan Pete but Duke is already in play as an ally for another player? Our playgroup decided that the player who drew Ashcan Pete gets Duke and the previous owner of Duke got another ally card.

Thanks,

Del

Question concerning this particular location which led to some discussion. The first task requires 2 investigation to complete but has 2 separate investigation icons. This requires 2 separate dice correct?

Alright, a couple dice questions.

1. I am on a adventure, and I need say 1 Skull for 1 Task, then 1 Lore and 1 Skull for the 2nd task. I fail the first role for the Skull and get rid of a die. Then I complete the first task. Now, for the 2nd task, I can only use the remaining dice, yes? I dont get to reuse the dice used for the first task?

2. Essentially the same, but if say, for example, 2 monsters are involved, and I would need like..8 dice to complete it. Do I get to use the dice I used to defeat the monsters to finish the task itself, or do I just defeat the monster, and if I dont have enough dice, fail the adventure itself, but still get the monster token?

Are we supposed to keep the cards of completed adventures to keep track of trophies?

1. After an adventure is completed, you return to the entrance?

2. Can you Lock a die using the spell AFTER completing a turn? how about while still rolling?

3. Using a clue, you can roll any number of dice (pretty obvious?) lol, just want to know if that means dice that have been discarded (assuming someone didnt think to use one until, say, they had 3 dice left)

Hey guys!
I just recently started this awesome game but faced a strange thing on our very first game. What happens if we are at the beginning without any Trophy symbols, and trying an adventure with a Terror effect on it requiring to discard a trophy and we can't? Do the char get devoured or what? Or simply ignore the terror since the player can't fulfill it?

Other question:
Professor Armitage?
When someone draw the Prof he can draw 2 spells immediately from the deck to place on him or those spells have to come from the player's hand?
What does this sentence referring on his card: "You may use these spells as if they were your own?" I thought players can use his own spells just like others, because spells are availabe for ANY player to use. Or did I misunderstood the rulebook and you can't save a die on your spell card for your own usage just for only other player's benefit?

I know ,this might be a typical question ,but :
1) Can I use a spell ,after failing the roll ,without discarding a dice ,or I must discard a dice even I secure another dice with a spell?
2) The mythos card at the very first turn - "at midnight" effect (imediate effect) does not happend ,but does the lingering effect still active?
PS: sorry for posting this ,but I don't understand the english very well ,so I get even more confused by searching the responses.

If the boss guy awakens, does he perform his attack every turn or only at midnight.

Are the special effect cards still revealed at midnight when fighting a boss?

Thanks

OK I am going to ask a query about a rule that until recently I was pretty sure I was doing it right. I've even answered other people's rules queries in this area with my opinion in the past (that'll teach me!). Now I am suddenly not so sure and I cannot find a decent answer anywhere. Simple question...

During my turn I use an item that allows me to roll RED and later cast a spell which secures the RED dice on a Skull. I do not use this skull. The turn passes to you. YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RED DIE IN YOUR DICE POOL THIS TURN.

a) Can you use the RED skull I secured?

b) Can you take the RED dice I secured and just roll it?

Until recently I was sure the answers were no and no. There was basically no way you can use that secured red dice unless you earned the right to roll RED for yourself in the first place. Once you earned that right, you could either use the Skull or just re-roll it.

Now I am starting to think the right answers are yes and no. Opinions please, or an offical place where this was answered?

Thanks!

We are vets at playing Elder Sign, but this is the first time we have fought Cthulhu. I get we lose 1 max stam and san for the game, but what's the point of adding doom token to his track after he ha already awoken. If he awoke, wouldn't it already be full? Can someone explain this?

Can I focus a die and also get an assist on another die, all on the back of the same failed role?

If I focus a die on a fail, then fail again next roll, can I leave it focused for my third attempt or does it go back in the pool after one roll where it went unused?

Can I focus or assist more than once in a single turn over multiple rolls. Eg Fail (and focus), next roll, success! using focused die, next roll fail....can I focus again?

There's a spell that allows 2 dice to be secured. Can I cast it and secure only 1 die?

Can you focus and assist as normal during the ancient one battle?

And just to be sure...on your turn do you have to decide and declare you are using an item before rolling any dice, and can you roll first and see how you do?

Many thanks

I think I saw a card, maybe an Old One, that said we all reduce our maximum amounts?

What exactly does this do? Is it dealing one damage AND reducing the max? If you are below your max at the time, is the only effect reducing your max?

It just seems a little weak, unless we're missing something. Thanks.

If I focus a die, then when I make my next roll, I fail again, can I now:

a) Leave the focused die as it and roll again with one less die. Basically can it just stay there focused until I can use it to complete a task.

b) Exchange that focused die with a different die. i.e focus something else (I still only end up with one focused die)

Exactly which dice can I secure with a spell? Complex example of what I do in a turn follows:

a) I roll all dice, and complete the first task with a green die on a Skull (die A)

If I cast a spell here, can I secure die A on the Skull?

b) I roll for the next task and fail, rolling a Tentacle which triggers a terror effect of "lose all Terror dice". I lose the Tentacle die (die B), and I also discard another die for the failed roll, that had 3 Clues on it (die C). I also focus a green die on a Scroll (die D).

If I cast a spell here, can I secure die A on the Skull?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die B on the Tentacle?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die C on the 3 Clues?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die D on the Scroll? If so, is Die D still focused for my next roll?

c) I roll again, and complete the 2nd task with the focused Scroll (die D) and a Skull (die E). The final die is showing an unneeded Skull (die F).

If I cast a spell here, can I secure die A on the Skull?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die B on the Tentacle?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die C on the 3 Clues?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die D on the Scroll?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die E on the Skull?
If I cast a spell here, can I secure die F on the Skull?

Hi guys, I just started playing ES (I come from AH).
One very simple question. When resolving an adventure, when I roll do I have to get ALL the correct dice for the task?
Example:
"The Elder Sign.
Roll 1, 6 dice, one of them is a scroll, first task completed (lose 1 sanity)

Roll 2, 5 dice, none of them is a scroll, none of them is an investigation, task 2 not completed on a very unlucky roll.

Roll 3, 4 dice, One of them is a scroll, Task 2 completed, lose 1 stamina.

Roll 4, 3 dice... One is a two-valued investigation [2], but none of the other two is a scroll. Now, can I keep the scroll die and roll the two remaining dice?

Or a successful Roll 4 should have been, 3 dice, One investigation[2] and one scroll?

Thanks!
