Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Locked die question from my first game

I had a monster pop that locked 2 green dice. I defeated the monster on my first roll by fulfilling the task (single skull) killing the monster and unlocking the 2 dice. Question was, do we return those 2 greens to the be rolled on the next task or are they discarded like the one skull I used to complete the task?

When a task calls for 6, 8, or 9 investigations, does that number need to be met in a single throw? (Most likely with a bit of red or yellow help...) Or can I set aside(as an extreme example)a 3 from my first roll, a 2 from the next, and 1 from the next?

Thanks!

I have some problems understanding the rules on dice management and playing cards

1. Can you use items, spells or allies after the last dice roll? Recently I had a spell card that could fully regain my investigator's stamina.

2. On a video I saw players place dice on an adventure card that matched the icons on a task, while they didn't complete that task. After reading the rules, I thaught that only securing dice on a marker or card AND after a failed roll (in case of the marker) was a legal move to 'hold' dice results. It wasn't in the rules that clearly though. So the question is: Is this true and do you have to roll a die again to complete a task, even if it showed a desired result while it can't be secured?

3. Recently I was trying to complete an adventure that had two tasks on it with two die icons each. After my first roll, I had the results I would need to complete both tasks. I know that I'm not allowed to concider more than one task completed at a time. However, I had a spell card that would make it possible to secure the two dice that would be required to complete the other task. That would mean that rolling the other dice would always result in completing the task. Is this kind of action allowed? The rules only say that securing on a investigator marker is only allowed after a failed roll. But they don't say if securing on a card is only allowed after failed roll or after a successful roll as well. Maybe I missed something, but I don't understand it completely.

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Ithaqua's in-game ability confusion- using a spell

I've posted this before, but still have my doubts about it, and I don't recall if a uniformed answer was given.

What does "using a spell" entail for Ithaqua's stamina penalty?

Does using a spell mean: securing a die on a spell?
Or using a secured die to complete a task?

Both?

If I have cast a spell and set aside a die, but then fail to complete the adventure, is that die still held out of the pool for the next player to potentially use? Or does the spell fizzle, for lack of a better word, with my failure and thus returns the die to the pool?

I ask mostly because in the Android version, spell-held dice don't make it to the next turn.

What happens if a Mythos Card causes an Other World to be discarded while another investigator is there?

We've always played that if a die-locking monster is defeated, the dice it locked are freed only at the end of the Resolution phase.

Is that correct?

We've figured the harshest interpretation is the correct one, but I'm not really sure it's supported by the rules.

They way I understood it (and have been playing it so far) is this way:

- Cards, which allow me to defeat a Monster after rolling dice I may only use on Monsters that are on the same Adventure-Card as me.
- Cards (Spells), which just tell me I may defeat 1 or more Monsters I may use on any Monsters that are currently in play, regardless on which Adventure I am.

I hope I'm doing this right.

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Question about Timing

Are there any rules, in which order Midnight Events have to be resolved? I'm currently in the following situation:
- The lingering effect of the Mythos cards tells me, that a Monster will appear.
- At the same time, the IT'S QUIET-Adventure has the Midnight Effect, that it's being discarded and not replaced.
- Now, with my current setup I could just put a Monster on that card, since there are no other free mandatory spaces in play, then discard it right away. Well, just theoretically, but since I play with Random Monster Placement, I may not choose, but there's still the possibility, it will spawnr on that Card.
- However, if Midnight Effects are being resolved before lingering Mythos Effects, this couldn't happen at all, and the monster would instead appear on another Adventure.

Please help me here.

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Spell that holds 2 Dice

Now there's a certain Spell which allows me to place 2 dice on it in order to use them for later on. I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to work, though. Obviously, after a roll I may put 1 or two dice on it, and move on. But if I only put 1 die on it, and I fail to resolve the next roll, too, may I still put another die on the remaining slot?
Thanks!

What do you do in this case? Do you reroll the yellow dice or can you only get one yellow dice? Sorry if this has been asked before, guys.

Does discarding an item of your choice after defeating the Rat Thing happen at the end of the Resolution phase, after rewards for completing an Adventure been doled out?

Does that mean if an Adventure card has given me a common Item as a reward, and I had only spells before, I simply discard the Common Item after drawing it immediately?

So I was playing Elder Sign today with a bunch of friends. We decided to face up against Yog-Sothoth, who (as we understand it) awakens when the Other World deck is depleted. During the course of the game, the Mythos card named 'The Arcane Art' came up, which states that at midnight, discard all Other World cards and remove them from play. As we understood it, this triggered Yog-Sothoth awakening early with only 4 HP.

Is this correct or did we go wrong somewhere?

Hello Bgg's

so I apologize if this questions been asked before but, I must ask it anyway.

1. When placing a monster on an adventure card the white box is generally surrounding an icon in some situations. Do I ignore this icon and place the monster over top of it? Or do I have to resolve that icon and then place the monster tile?

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Die on a Spell - Mythos Effect forbids using Spells

Yesterday we came across a unique situation, just a minor issue, but we still had to houserule it. I wanted to ask, how others would've handled this:

There still was a die left on a Spell with a "Hold-Space", when Midnight struck. The new Mythos Card had a Lingering Effect on it, which prohibited the use of Spell-cards until next Midnight. Now, how about that Die left on the Spell?
- May it's result still be used?
- Must it stay on the Spell until the Lingering Effect ends?
- May it be added back into the pool for a regular roll (in this case discarding the Spell-Card)?
We opted for the last option. So, may not be used with it's result, but may be rolled in a regular move.
Thanks!

Thread: Elder Sign:: Rules:: Difference between "Defeat a Monster"-cards (Unique Item vs. Spell)

Now I can only rely on the german wording, but on the Unique Item-Card it says something like: "After rolling dice, you may defeat a monster", while on the Spell-Card it just says "Defeat a Monster".
We always played it this way, that you'll actually have to try the respective Adventure in order to make use of those cards, because everything else seemed like an exploit to us (just take any monster and add it to your Trophy-Collection just seems wrong). There's this one Spell, though, which allows you to discard any 3 Monsters from play, this we is pretty straightforward and we played it like intended: before moving, you may take any 3 Monsters and put them back in the Monster Cup.

Back to my initial question: how are you playing that Monster-Defeating-Spell: before or after your roll, or even before moving? We opted for former variant, where you've to play it before your roll (but you still must be on that Adventure, trying to resolve it). This makes it actually a bit weaker than the respective Unique Item, but we can live with this, makes the game more challenging and the card less of an Instant-Win-Joker. And of course you'll get to keep it as a trophy.

Hi, I just purchased this game and had 1st game last night with the wife, I've payed the iPad version a few times but obviously the real game is slightly different, few questions here I'm not sure about, can any please help me out?
1. Can I play a spell anytime during an adventure? If I play a spell the lets you keep a dice result on it, but then don't use it, what happens to the spell and dice? Do I just take dice back for the next player and discard the spell, or does the dice stay on the spell next to that adventure card for the next player to use that result? Also if I play the spell then roll all the results I need to defeat the adventure, not using the spell, does the spell card stay there with no dice on it, or is it discarded?

2. When your against a monster marker and you beat it, you take the monster marker straight away, even if you don't complete the adventure? Also you don't have to complete the task that the monster marker was covering do you?.

3. If 2 or more player markers are on the same adventure can you focus and assist on the same turn? Am I right in thinking if you use the other players marker (assist) and you don't complete the adventure then one of you pays a penalty.

Thanks
